Hollowshore: Shadows & Legends of Faversham Creek
Sketch #48 / Book #2 (2022)
Capture a piece of Kent’s rugged coastal heritage with this original drawing.
The view is captured from the seawall between Oare and Faversham Creek, right next to the historic Shipwrights Arms a smashing local watering hole well worth a tipple or two. In this piece, the morning sun rises just beyond the distant electric pylons, casting long, dramatic shadows across the landscape. At low tide, the creek runs remarkably deep here, revealing silty trenches beautifully sculpted by centuries of daily tides.
Folklore and Legends
This particular stretch of the creek is steeped in centuries of coastal history and local lore:
-
The Meaning of 'Hollowshore': Local legend claims a Norse leader once landed on these marshes and declared the area "Holy Shore." Others believe the name simply evolved from the deep, hollow-shaped creek beds known so well by local boaters.
-
Ghosts & Smugglers: Over the centuries, this spot has served as an active cutting station for shipping. It's even said to be haunted by a ghost that appears every Christmas from the wreck of a sunken ship.
-
The Real Jack Sparrow: Hollywood’s infamous Captain Jack Sparrow was reportedly based on Jack Ward (also known as "Birdy"), a notorious pirate who hailed right here from Faversham and sailed these exact waters.

After extensive research and testing, I have selected the Hahnemuhle German Etching (310gsm) Fine Paper. A heavy-duty paper with a textured finish, a velvety matt surface, and a warm white hue — I believe it reproduces my drawings superbly.
Each giclee art print features the original drawing, which has undergone a meticulous process to capture the detail with the utmost accuracy paying close attention to the texture, details and ink work.
I have personally remastered each drawing digitally to remove the fold from my 2020 sketchbook to give you the best possible view of the original pen and ink drawing.
My original notebook (#1) was cartridge paper in portrait format resulting in the square format. Each page from this notebook had an array of faint grey dots removed carefully from the art print for a better view of the original drawing.
